Acting F.A.S.T. – Learning To Recognize The Signs Of A Stroke
In nearly every emergency, victims are racing against time — and strokes are no exception. According to the American Heart Association, strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S., with an American suffering a stroke approximately every 40 seconds. Recognizing the signs early can dramatically improve outcomes and save lives.

What Happens During a Stroke

A stroke occurs when the brain cannot receive blood and oxygen due to a blocked or burst blood vessel. Like a heart attack, this deprives vital cells of oxygen, causing brain cell death and potentially leading to disability or death.

F.A.S.T. — Recognize the Major Symptoms

FAST is an easy-to-remember acronym that highlights the most important signs of a stroke:

  • F – Face Drooping: Ask the person to smile. If one side of the face droops, call 9-1-1.
  • A – Arm Weakness: Ask the person to lift both arms. If one arm drifts downward, call 9-1-1.
  • S – Speech Difficulty: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Slurred or incorrect speech is a warning sign.
  • T – Time to Call 9-1-1: Call immediately, even if symptoms seem to go away. Note the time the first symptom appeared, as it affects treatment.

Additional Stroke Symptoms

Besides the FAST symptoms, watch for sudden:

  • Numbness or weakness in the leg, arm, or face
  • Confusion or trouble understanding
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination
  • Severe headache with no known cause

Act Fast — Every Second Counts

The sooner medical attention is received, the better the outcome. Even temporary or mild symptoms require immediate attention. Quick action can significantly reduce long-term disability and save lives.

Educating Yourself Saves Lives

By learning to recognize the signs of a stroke, you increase the chances of helping someone before it’s too late. Education and preparedness are crucial in preventing tragic outcomes.
