Work Environment
All participants must know that the pools they’ll be working at are outdoors. They’ll be in direct sunlight, as well as standing up and maintaining focus for long periods of time. The lifeguard position is a demanding job, especially due to the amount of concentration and attentiveness one needs to have during the shift. Also, high temperatures need to be expected, therefore, they’ll have to keep themselves hydrated as much as possible.
What does a normal day look like in CA?
Cities in California are not close to each other; therefore, we recommend all participants to have vehicle transportation to easily reach their destination. In case they’re interested in walking or riding a bike, they’ll need to be prepared for long travel times. If participants do use vehicle transportation, the traffic should also be considered. Since there is a large population and most people drive from one place to another, there are some trips that end up taking a very long. In this case, we recommend checking a GPS for daily traffic conditions to plan traffic and transportation times accordingly.
Weather in Southern California
Southern California is known for its mild weather year-round. During the summer it gets pretty hot. All participants must be prepared for high UV levels, wear sunscreen and other protective clothing when going outside. If not, they could easily get a sunburn and become dehydrates; you can still get burnt even if it’s a cloudy day. It’s essential for each participant to always have water with them to help prevent dehydration and other heat related illnesses.
Laws
All participants must know that the legal age to buy and consume alcohol in the United States is 21 years of age. The legal age to buy and use cigarettes and marijuana in California is 21 years of age. Additionally, it’s not legal to walk with alcohol and drink in public places.
Security in Southern California
Orange County, in general, is a very safe city. However, it’s essential to take precautions, try to avoid walking alone very late at night or in the early mornings, and do not take out your phone when walking on the streets. It’s not necessary to always be aware whether something is going to happen or not, but it’s recommended that they exercise caution and do not partake in things you wouldn’t do in their own hometown. We recommend them to exercise caution and try to avoid uncrowded places, as well as unfamiliar or unknown situations and places.
